A big hug and a postcard to the first person to tell me where I got the title of the post from. ;) Actually, what I seem to have are pen issues. Besides the exploding pen the other day, yesterday and today all my nice gel pens have run out. I feel like the lifespan of a pen should be more than a month, even if I am using them much more intensively than I usually do. I'm not used to having classes where you have to write down (and retain!) so much information, rather than general feelings, themes, interpretations. I have some non-gel pens to see me through...but the others make my writing look so nice...if I'm not hurrying. I'm such a dork, I want aesthetic notes... *laughs*
Just finished reading: English as a Global Language, by David Crystal. Okay, so it is a textbook, but I had to read the whole thing (in one night, too) so I feel like I should get credit for it. Best idea:
"Language is an immensely democratising institution. To have learned a language is immediately to have rights in it. You may add to it, modify it, play with it, create in it, ignore bits of it, as you will" (172).
So it's all right, kids. Forget what mom said, it's fine to play with your English. :)
